Many organisations are still running Windows 10 simply because it functions. But in technology, “it works” does not mean “it’s safe.”
On 14 October 2025, Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10. That date marks the end of updates, patches, and vendor assistance.
What Windows 10 End of Support Means
From October 2025 onward:
- No security updates. Newly discovered vulnerabilities will remain open.
- No bug fixes. Software conflicts and errors will not be corrected.
- No vendor support. Microsoft will not respond when issues arise.
Computers running Windows 10 will still power on, but they will be exposed. We have already seen what happens when an operating system goes out of support: attacks against Windows XP and Windows 7 spiked almost immediately.
Many Organisations Are Not Prepared
According to Canalys research, a significant number of businesses remain unaware or unprepared for this deadline.
- 21% know support is ending but have no plan.
- 14% are completely unaware.
- Only 35% have a clear roadmap in place.
That leaves almost two-thirds of organisations exposed. In Uganda, where IT budgets are often stretched, this level of unpreparedness could be even higher.
Extended Security Updates (ESUs) may appear to be an option. In reality they are expensive, increase in price annually, and serve only as a temporary stopgap.
Why Windows 11 Is the Right Step
Moving to Windows 11 is not just about avoiding risk. It provides:
- Enhanced security designed for modern threats.
- Better performance on supported devices.
- Integration with Microsoft 365, Teams, OneDrive, and Copilot.
- Features built for hybrid and remote work.
Windows 11 positions businesses to work more securely and efficiently.
The Hardware Challenge in Uganda
Not every Windows 10 machine can run Windows 11. Many older devices lack TPM 2.0, compatible processors, or enough memory. This creates a significant challenge for Ugandan organisations where computers are expensive and replacement cannot always happen immediately.
Replacing every unsupported device in one go is rarely realistic. That does not mean the hardware has no further use. With planning, older machines can still provide value in other roles:
- Switch to Linux. Lightweight Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or Zorin can run smoothly on older machines, extending their life for office tasks, browsing, or basic productivity.
- Use as terminals. Legacy devices can act as thin clients connected to a central server or virtual desktop environment. This reduces processing demands on the local machine while keeping staff productive.
- Create training or education labs. Older devices may still be suitable for training environments, community projects, or schools where performance requirements are lower.
- Repurpose for single-use tasks. Machines can be reassigned as point-of-sale systems, print servers, or local file storage in small offices.
- Donate after secure wiping. If the machines no longer fit business needs, they can still serve NGOs, rural schools, or community centres once data has been safely removed.
These approaches allow organisations to phase in new hardware without unnecessary waste or financial strain. A gradual replacement plan reduces cost shocks and ensures resources are used responsibly.
October 2025 Is a Firm Deadline
Consider these questions now:
- Have we identified which devices are compatible with Windows 11?
- Do we have funding allocated for replacements?
- Is there a timeline to complete upgrades before October 2025?
If any of these cannot be answered confidently, the business is already behind.
How V3locity Global Supports Migration
V3locity Global is working with organisations across Uganda to prepare for this transition. Our process is structured and practical:
- Assessment – Reviewing your devices and flagging those that require action.
- Roadmap – Designing a clear, staged upgrade plan.
- Implementation – Managing migrations and hardware refreshes with minimal disruption.
- Ongoing Support – Maintaining your systems after the move to ensure stability and security.
This is not a routine IT task. It is a matter of protecting business continuity, compliance, and reputation.
The Bottom Line
Windows 10 support will end in October 2025. Organisations that prepare now will make the transition smoothly and keep their systems protected. Those that delay will face higher costs, unnecessary disruption, and greater security risks.
V3locity Global is ready to guide you through every step. Contact us today and prepare your business for Windows 11.
